What is the difference in contrast ratios in monitors? 1000:1 and 80 million to 1?

Hi everyone, so I am not all familiar with monitors and I currently have a Dell E2311H monitor and it has been very good but I am planning on buying a new Asus monitor that has HDMI and speakers built in.

I notice that my current Dell monitor says it has contrast ratio of 1000:1 and the Asus monitor that I am planning to buy has a contrast ratio of 80,000,000:1.

What does this mean and what difference will I see? They both are 1920x1080 display and my Dell is 23" while the Asus is 23.6".

Actually, not a lot, because those are just manufacturer reported marketing numbers. There is no 'standard'.

Oh ok, so what I am seeing now on my Dell, switching to the Asus will be the same? I really like my Dell display and the only reason I am upgrading is because of the HDMI and speakers on the Asus, so if the display is gonna be the same then that'll be great.

"Be the same"? Not necessarily. But it won't be because of a marketing number.
