Hello

I need an upgrade and I want a good graphic for the budget it deserve. How much is the difference between GTX 980 and 970? I know the price difference is a lot. I checked some games performance at youtube and google, and I found out that there is not too much difference and correct me if I I am wrong that's why am asking here. Note that my motherboard supports only PCI-E 2.0 which means I will have some performance drop.

So what do you guys think? what to pick? Also I am thinking of going SLI around December this year.

Right now in Sweden the GTX 980 cost $635 and the GTX 970 cost $430.

Thanks for your time!

If you play at 1080p the 970 will be enough. It will most-likely delivery greater than or equal to 60FPS on new games (AAA).

The 980 is a beast. If you have the money to buy it then go ahead.

but I might suggest to buy the 970 and upgrade your mobo so you won't experience the perf-drops .

Also, what is your power supply and CPU?

Right now am using 1080p. I may buy new monitor but even if I do am still going 1080p only bigger size.

Even if you change from 24" to 27" as long as its on 1080p it won't change the performance of the cards.

The CPU will be fine and it won't bottleneck the GPU.

1000W is overkill for a single 970 & 980 card, as for SLI you might want to check the quality of your PSU. A generic 1000W might kill your system if you use it for SLI.

I did not understand what you meant by (A generic 1000W might kill your system if you use it for SLI) Can you describe it more if you don't mind thanks!
I've been using my PSU for 4 years now worked with no problems.

Generic PSUs can cause damage to your systems because of surges, spikes, or sags. They also cause random reboots. I think you are still fine on using that PSU because you don't need high power. It might say it can supply 1000W but that might only be maximum output at something like 25 C, which is not the operating temperature in real use.

If you SLI you will definitely need a High Wattage Quality PSU.

Edit:
This can help explain this more.

is there any way to know if my PSU does have real 1000W?
I have GTX 560 Ti right now. I may be able to get another one from a friend just to test how SLI goes. If the GTX 560 Ti SLI works without problem for a week would it mean that I am good to go with GTX 970 SLI with this PSU?
