I am building a new PC and my plan is to have an SSD (Crucial MX100 256GB) boot drive and use 4 1 TB HDD in a RAID 5 array for storage. So far I am unable to get this configuration to work.

If I set SATA in the BIOS to RAID the SSD does not appear in Windows setup even if I load the RAID preinstall driver.

If I set the BIOS to AHCI I can install Windows to the SSD but as soon as I change it to RAID Windows BSODs and reboots even after changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV

Now for all the specifics of what I'm working with

Gigabyte GA-970-UD3P
AMD FX-6300
16GB DDR3
Crucial MX100 256GB SSD
4*Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB HDD

If anyone has any suggestion it would be much appreciated.

You may have a problem with controller. I know that this configuration is possible but controller will be suitable. You check and you try install LINUX tempolary and you see available disks. In bios set: RAID +JBOD(SSD) you try this.
