Hey guys,

First time writing into the forums, Really been enjoying the questions & responses from this community.

Anyways, I recently invested in new hardware for a 6yr old computer. I spent about $1500 And am really happy with most of my decisions. There are a couple of items I purchased though that I can't stop thinking if I made the best choice or not. The GPU & Monitor. Two problems. I worry about the longevity of the 960 & I really think I want a 4k Monitor. I want to play with 4k but I haven't got to experience hand son with a PC yet. Is 4k worth it yet? Should I get a new GPU regardless of monitor? Is 4k really only viable with SLI?

Here's the meat of what I bought and I should be putting it together tonight.

Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler
Asus Z97-A ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Items in question
Asus GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card
AOC G2770PQU 144Hz 27.0" Monitor (27" 1080p 1ms)

PLEASE let me know what you guys think? Did I make horrible choices? or am I going to be happy? I'm upgrading from 1050 monitors (two) & a GTX465

Thanks for any feedback

The GTX 960 will be a little weak for 4K rez. That's 8,294,400 pixels to render PER frame. A 1080p rez display only requires the card to render 2,073,600 pixels per frame. As you can see, your framerate will drop by a factor of 4. So if you are getting a min of 240 fps now in the games you play at 1080p, you will be able to maintain 60 fps at 4K. I don't think even the GTX 970 can do that. Not at high settings anyway.

Thanks for the response. With the 960 I pretty much assumed 4k was not an option. I want to avoid 1440 because I assume it's on it's way out with 4k in the near horizon. I got my system powered up this morning, about 5 hours ago actually (Now it's work & coffee). Yesterday, I visited a new local store I found and although they don't have 4k in the store a couple of the employees were willing to bring their systems in for me to checkout this weekend, with 4k! Once I get hands on I'll re-evaluate my concerns. Going to play with the 960 tonight & tomorrow, but have a feeling I might go ahead and swap it out for something meatier (970)
