When monitor set to correct resolution, nothing is displayed?

Hi, I just realised I have a HDMI port on my graphics card, so I unplug my VGA cable and plugged in a HDMI cable. The monitors resolution is 1280x960, however, when I set the screen resolution to 1280x960 the monitor displays nothing, but if I set it to any other resolution, it works fine... How can I fix this, or should I just carry on using DVI?

What monitor do you have, 1280x960 is not a normal resolution at common aspect ratios. If it is 1280 wide it should be x720,768 or 1024.

It's actually an old TV not a monitor
