Single GTX 980 or Dual GXT 960 Sli?

I am looking for a GPU upgrade on my current PC, which specs include:
Intel Core i7 4790k
Currently a single Asus GTX 760
8GB Corsair RAM
Case (doesn't usually matter) Corsair Carbide Spec-03
ASRock Z97 Extreme3 MoBo
500w power supply (I can upgrade if needed)
Kingstone SSD NOW 120gb SSD with WD Blue (1TB)


I am currently running three 1080p monitors off of my single GTX 760 (pretty surprising it works) and I am looking to upgrade to either a single Asus GTX 980 (I like Asus's Strix lineup) or Dual Asus GTX 960s in SLI. Which would be better for triple monitor setups? The dual 960 SLI is actually more inexpensive. PS I would also consider a single or dual GTX 970 if you really think it's needed.

Yeah because sli only makes use of one GPU's vram.

Yep go 980, then can upgrade go SLI down the road, if you go dual 960's, no upgrade path and will get very little out of them in resale

I'm gonna go with the Single Asus GTX 980 Strix, mostly because of it's far superior VRa, and because I can upgrade it to dual GTX 980s exentually in the future for better performance. VRAM doesn't stack, nor is it intended to stack in the future. Two cards running crossfire or SLI keep the same information stored in each of their ram at the same time, they just produce every other frame then splice them together for the monitor to display.
