Could plugging an extra, unnecessary cable caused damage to my GPU?

I have two GTX 980's in SLI and an ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q. Included in the monitor box was a USB cable where one side was a USB 3.0 type B and the other side a USB 3.0 type A. I didn't know much about monitors and saw a picture on the directions that looked like it was telling me to plug the type B into the monitor and the type A part into the computer, so I did (I plugged the type A into my motherboard). I kept it like that for a few days and then realized that it does absolutely nothing. I unplugged it and noticed my GPU acting up. The monitor was blinking quite a lot, it was getting lower scores in 3dmark firestrike, and my games occasionally froze. This only happened twice, but the monitor blinked and then everything looked all weird as if it was extremely low res or something (hard to describe) so I had to restart to make it look normal again. Can someone tell me if plugging the unnecessary USB cable damaged my GPU?
