HD 7970 vs R9 280x

I keep reading that the R9 280x is simply a re-branded HD 7970. Are they really the exact same cards with different names? If I bought, say, a Gigabyte Windforce edition of one, would it be exactly the same as the other?

I'm looking at buying used off of ebay, and the 7970s are considerably cheaper.

They are the same but the 280x usually has a slightly higher clock speed. I would get the 7970 if it is cheaper.
