make my laptop screen better for watching movies with scenes in dark surroundings

I have a dell Insperon laptop, an which I watch all my shows and movies. However the screen is so dim or lacking in depth that if the surrounding of the scene are dark, all I can see is a dark screen. No people moving around or conversations being had. This is especially bad for Game of Thrones where dark is their "thing". Can anyone tell me how to add depth and/or brightness to my display? Thanks so much

At the top of your keyboard, some of the F keys (possibly the arrow keys) should have coloured symbols on them. You're looking for the ones with a stylized sun on them (with rays). One should make it brighter, one dimmer.

You may need to hold the Fn key to use them.
