how to be a web designer

i wan to be a well web designer,what basics i should learn to be a web designer?at present i am pursuing a degree in computer science.....and am i requirred a deep understanding in java language?

as i know - nope
pick up any soft you like to learn for composing websites and learn it
one good starter prog is KompoZer - its free and you can find alot of tutorials for it
Ofcourse if you want something more professional later on you can buy the Dreamweaver from Adobe, which is also relatively easy to use
