  2. 60Hz on a LCD monitor with no flickering (no PWM) shouldn't cause eye strain. LCD monitors don't refresh like older CRT monitors.

    Eye strain on LCD monitors are usually caused by other factors like brightness, distance is too far to see text, sitting too close to a large screen, etc.
  3. I keep reading about LCDs and flicker rate and very simplistic explanations suggesting that LCDs don't flicker and therefore cannot cause strain because LEDs are always lit. This is just total misrepresentation. LCDs do casue serious problems. I also have fatigue and strain from them. Even though LED is always lit there are many artificially induced flicker / strobes in LED monitors. These are called modulations or PWMs. This technology regulates brightness by interrupting LEDs and creating gaps of darkness. This is so horrendous that in fact it is worse than CRTs or CCFLs put together. On CCFLs I was able to hike refresh rate to 75Khz and it would normally make the experience much nicer. LEDs are really difficult. Cannot find a solution. Even those new types that say they are flicker-free are also very nasty.
  4. I found that IPS type LCDs are at least better in terms of colour /angle of viewing. Some LCDs cause awful colour mutations depending on angle. IPS seems better with this problem, but refresh rate / strobing and LED light in general is a nasty way to light the screen. There is no end to problems. From abnormal blue light peaks that actual damage retina to strobing and modulations used to control brightness and contrast. A real nightmare. And on top of everything else, monitors that say can do 144Khz will open up another can of worms - graphics cards do not normally support such refresh rates as they are all made cheap and nasty to go with cheap and nasty LCDs made for HD/TV 60Khz max.
  5. Modern panels are LED edge lit not back lit, with multiple layers and diffused light, so you're not looking at the LED source, and they use far less light to achieve the same result. Back lit is old tech, can't find that on the market today. Eye strain is caused by blue light, sitting too close, and the resolution is so low that you put a lot of stress on your eyes. In general you tend to blink a lot less staring at a screen, than you normally would- which is also a factor which causes discomfort. LCD's cannot harm your eyes permanently, eye strain and that's it, those who say otherwise are currently making people buy 'special, low blue light' monitors to counter the eye strain you get, but reality is, it's all a marketing gimmick.

    What you're looking for is a PWM FREE BACKLIGHT. It doesn't matter what the refresh rate is, although the higher the refresh rate, the better. But what you're describing is PWM flicker. PWM flicker is used to "dim" backlights when you reduce the brightness under 100%, to make the monitor dimmer. A PWM Free backlight does not use PWM dimming, but instead uses something else to linearly decrease the voltage (I don't remember what it's called). The Asus ROG Swift is PWM Free. The Benq Z series monitors and the XL2430T are also PWM free (the older T series, however, are NOT. The XL2430T should have been called the XL2430Z). The XL2420G is also PWM free. The Acer Predator should also be PWM free.

    For other screens, you need to do your research. But that's what you want. "PWM free backlight."

    Note: all monitors that have motion blur reduction are naturally flickering by default when blur reduction is used, since the backlight is in "strobe"' mode (which is a flicker). If blur reduction is off, then PWM free monitors are flicker free. Some people find strobe flicker more tolerable than PWM flicker (as the way the flicker occurs is VASTLY different).
