Modern panels are LED edge lit not back lit, with multiple layers and diffused light, so you're not looking at the LED source, and they use far less light to achieve the same result. Back lit is old tech, can't find that on the market today. Eye strain is caused by blue light, sitting too close, and the resolution is so low that you put a lot of stress on your eyes. In general you tend to blink a lot less staring at a screen, than you normally would- which is also a factor which causes discomfort. LCD's cannot harm your eyes permanently, eye strain and that's it, those who say otherwise are currently making people buy 'special, low blue light' monitors to counter the eye strain you get, but reality is, it's all a marketing gimmick.
