R9 290x overkill for 1080P gaming?

Should I go with an R9 290x for "Ultra/Very High" settings whilst being at 1080p or buy a GTX 970 instead? I wont be playing 4k as I have a 1080p monitor.

Personally I'd go for a 970 or 980. Project Cars and GTA5 are recent examples of games where they perform better with Nvidia cards due to better driver support.
