My current motherboard is one of the wonderful original sandy bridge 67 boards with sata issues which I unfortunately never got replaced. I did however purchase a z77 board to replace it two or three years ago, which has been sitting in the box untouched since I purchased it. This weekend I'd like to finally install it as I'm tired of two of my drives running off the 3gb/s sata ports and Windows 8.1 is in need of a reinstall.

But, is there any drawbacks to doing so? Apart from the potential wasted time if the board does not work, as I imagine it is well out of warranty. There's no degradation of sorts by the board just sitting on a shelf for a few years is there? I would like to continue using my 2600k if possible instead of scrapping it for a new processor and motherboard.

Think of it this way. If it was in use it would be exposed to heat, dust, moisture and anything else floating around in the air. But it's been safely tucked away in its box and should be good as new!
