Hello everyone,

this forum group has served me well in the past, so I figured I'd give it a shot again :)

I have decided to upgrade from the Phenom 2 build I was able to do with help from some of you.

components for the new build are:
CPU: i7-4790 (no need for the 'k' version, not intending to overclock)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI
PSU: Cooler Master V650 modular (Haswell ready)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro Series 1600MHz 16GB (2x8GB) in gold
CPU cooler: Corsair Hydro series H60
Case: Corsair Graphite Series 380T in black
GPU: (a bit old, but still decent for my 1080p gaming) Sapphire Radeon 7870 OC Edition
Boot Disk: Corsair Neutron GTX 120GB SSD
Data/program Drive: WD blue 1TB

my question(s) to you guys is:
1. will this all fit in the case, and be a good system
2. how well will the cooler work in this rig.
3.If the motherboard isn't that great, can you recommend one with comparable features, at the same price point (134.95 on amazon)?

I have used PCpartpicker to check compatibility. but feel free to add any concerns I should be aware of.

thank you guys (and gals).

All good, just change the SSD to a Samsung 850 EVO 120GB, and the processor to a Xeon E3 1241 V3. I wouldn't recommend water cooling, as you're not going to overclock. Get a Hyper TX3 or something like that, or keep the stock cooler. Otherwise your system is good.

yeah, I already have the SSD, as well as the gpu and HDD. my other thought is an i5-4690k.

not familiar with Xeon chips, care to enlighten me a bit on them? thank you

EDIT: I just looked them up, basically a non-igpu version of i7 haswells..

I'm leaning toward the i7, my question also would be if the integrated GPU can output thru the motherboard, or does the Dedicated take over? not familiar with this desktop level setup.

Xeons are more worth it. They might seem more complicated and all, but they're basically i5s/i7s, with no over-clocking and integrated graphics. There's really nothing special about the Xeon. It's just another LGA1150 CPU.

I am only looking for a CPU that can run a game well, and stream decently enough to not feel to much of a performance hit. Say at either 1280x720 or 1080p (maybe, but my net won't support that high).

Also, video encoding, I am aware the i7 is best at both, but if an i5 can do it (4690k) I'll go that route.

ok, thank you.

so you think the Xeon is a better option, considering my idea for what I plan to do with it? (streaming, gaming, and some video encoding).

if so, it's definitely a good buy.

Also, I can't see anything regarding whether the Xeon has the turbo boost like the i5/i7, kind of curious to know if it does.

The Xeon has turbo.

There's more info on the processor here.

It's basically the same as the i7, and the i7 should do the streaming, gaming, and video encoding pretty well. So, in conclusion, Xeon is the Core i5/i7 without the iGPU and overclocking.

the xeon 1231v3 does not have an igpu so there will be no video output to the motherboard. if you specifically want a second monitor powered by the cpu then you will need an i5/i7.

honestly this is the wrong time to buy any processor since the skylake architecture will be released in a month or two. the 4790, 4690k, 1231v3, etc will all be replaced by newer better stuff so if you have run your phenom setup this long then you can definitely wait a couple more months.
