Here's my current specs:-
FX-6300 at 4.2Ghz running at 1.25v (I think)
Gigabyte 970A-UD3P
XFX HD7850 2GB running at 1200Mhz Core/1300Mhz Memory at 1.150v
2 Hard drives.. HDD and an SSD
2 case fans and an Antec 550w 80 Plus Gold which can output 45A combined between the 2 +12v rails, 2x6+2 pin PCI express connectors.

So I want to be able to run pretty much any game right now at 1080p, max settings, 2/4x MSAA mainly because my 7850 as good as it is, really struggles at times with staying at 30fps (GTA5, Crysis 3, Metro Redux etc)

I'm not really looking at a budget right now but say if the new R300 series from AMD are any good, how high up the graphics card chain can I go when I purchase a new one?

Depends on what your budget is, but definitely wait until the reveal on the 16th. For 1080p gaming you do not need more than 4GB VRAM. But for now, the GTX 970 reigns supreme for the price/performance and has plenty of oomph! for 1080p gaming at max settings and smooth gameplay. I use mine for 1440p so it struggles a bit, but with a slight OC it catches up pretty easily.

Hello, the 970 looks good but it costs 330$+. If you are on tight budget, consider buying a gtx 960, it's 200$. 970 max out the game, but 960 makes you play gta 5 on high settings witch is really still amazing, and there is no such huge difference between high and ultra. I would take the 960.
