More clarification on the "free" Win 10 upgrade please

I have a friend who bought a retail Win 7 Home Premium "upgrade", and used it to go to Win 7 from XP a couple of years back.

He asked me if he qualified for the free Win 10 upgrade, and I said yes (but then I'd not seen anything that says one way or the other regarding Win 7 upgrades...

So, can somebody point me to a resource that says yes or no?

Yes, i bought the HP Upgrade 3-pack and have already reserved my Windows 10 copy. I've only reserved 1 of the 3 so I can try it out and see if it's worth keeping.

Thanks for the response. It sounds like your upgrade was an OEM upgrade from HP, not a retail box upgrade.

No, HP = Home Premium. Sorry for the confusion. The only thing Microsoft requires is a valid license key, they treat the upgrade versions as equal to the full. Nowhere on their site does it specify OEM, Full or Upgrade, just says Windows 7 SP1. Here is the FAQ:
