I'm planning on picking up a new monitor because my current one is 5 years old, but I'm torn.
I'm running a 4690k with a single GTX 970, my rig is SLI ready, so 1440p would be a good choice after I get the second card. The problem is, 1440p 144hz G-Sync monitors are still stupidly expensive(nearly 3x the price), so I'm forced to choose between higher framerate and higher resolution.
I'd like some input from people with experience with 144hz and 1440p, which is more worth the investment, because my wallet isn't ready for both yet.

Solution
Of the two, I'd go 144Hz before 1440p

1080p G-Sync "capable" (can be added if you can still find the kit) monitors aren't very expensive but those that have it are $400-$500.

Twin 970s is a bit weak for 3 x 1440p. Games like Rys, Watch Dogs. Metro LL, Far Cry 4 , will be in the 30 fps range.... some like Dead Rising, AC Unity will be under 20 fps

3 x 1440p is 1.33 times the load of 3840 x 2160 so figure on at best 75% of the performance you see in the 19 games here for 2160p:
