144Hz G-Sync TN 1080p display or 60Hz 1080p IPS Display?

Hi I am going to upgrade from the GTX 770 to the GTX 980Ti, and my motherboard from the Gigabyte Z87X-OC to the ASUS Maximus VII Hero. With that upgrade I am going to buy a new monitor. I am really torn between a good 144Hz G-Sync TN display and a good 1080p 60Hz IPS Display. I know the Acer Predator exists, but it is too expensive for me, and I do prefer the higher framerate of 1080p.
The games I mainly play are RPGs and action adventure games like, Skyrim, Fallout, Shadow of Mordor, Borderlands and the Batman Arkham Series.

The GTX 980 Ti is overkill for 1080p so you should consider 144Hz to atleast make use of the 980 Ti's power.

IPS typically comes with better coloring and for the games mentioned 144Hz is not really necessary. You could pick up a decent 24-27 Inch AH-IPS monitor combined with the GTX 970 and you've got all you need.

144Hz is a good idea for a 980 Ti @ 1080p you will easily get 144 fps to match the monitor. I would recommend a good 144Hz maybe 1440p G-sync monitor, instead of a 60Hz IPS monitor. 144 fps will improve your gaming forever and it will feel almost 3 times as smooth as 60 fps. 144Hz is the best thing you can get for a 980 Ti because otherwise the fps you get from your 980 Ti is all wasted and you might as well have bought a GTX 960 that gets 60 fps - 100fps in most games.

I like to be ready for future games. And I really do like to mod the hell out of Skyrim and Fallout

Hmm maybe I will just buy a new good IPS display and just wait a year or so with the upgrade. What would you recommend for a high end 1080p IPS display at around 24''

Hey is the ASUS PB238Q better than the ASUS MX259H? They are both IPS and the ASUS PB238Q is a lot cheaper here in my country

So you're getting a 60Hz IPS monitor ok. I would have gone with TN 144Hz, if you play games the extra 80 or so fps really makes a huge difference. It will make 60 fps look laggy and 144 fps feel so smooth. I don't see the problem with TN monitors, most people use them and they are still good if you buy a brand monitor like BenQ or Asus.

This is the monitor I'm saving up for:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/BenQ-XL2411Z-24-inch-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B00HZF2JWA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434606469&sr=8-1&keywords=XL2411Z

It's 144Hz, 1ms response time, 24 inch 1080p good BenQ monitor. The monitor has a headphone holder, a handle to move it around, a headphone and microphone jack, 2 USB 3.0 slots and is a really good monitor for the money.

I have indeed experienced the smoothness of 144Hz, but I really love a good image quality as I don't play FPS that much

Yeah but the games you mentioned will look amazing at 144fps and also then your extra fps isn't wasted. If you buy a computer/build a computer that gets over 60fps but you have a 60Hz monitor then that extra fps is wasted and you might as well have bought a worse computer to save money. TN monitors are still great and are used by almost everyone, only people who are artists/editor/designers, etc really need IPS. TN is for gaming and is fine.

Having been in the same situation (deciding between the merits of the faster TNs or IPS colors) I did quite a bit of research in the last week. I ended up getting a QNIX QX2710, a PLS (very similar to IPS) display that can be overclocked to 100+ hz, and has 1440p resolution. Something you might want to consider; you definitely have enough graphics horsepower.

I Think I will be buying an IPS monitor. If I don't like it I'll just return it

Ok, well you will like it. But you won't get the 144Hz which means having a 980 Ti is basically wasted, so you have wasted £600-£700 of your money because you can only see 60 fps when you get like 150+ fps in every game. IPS will have slightly better colours but for me it isn't noticeable, I would much rather have a monitor where my GPU isn't wasted.

You seem like me. I like action games, but value a high quality image over bleeding edge speed. A 980ti will give you a ton of power to play with. If you go with a 144hz 1080p, you're turning it all into speed. With an IPS, especially at 1440p, then you're turning some of it into extra quality.

It sounds to me like you're spending a lot of money to upgrade a perfectly good core system (Z87) to something flashy that won't give you much real world performance. (I upgraded my first gen i5 to a Z97 and 4690k a few months back, so I know this to be true.) I would strongly suggest getting the 980ti you want, skip the system upgrade (don't forget, sky Lake is right around the corner too!) and get that 144hz ips gsync predator monitor instead.

Already ordered the Asus PB238Q to see if IPS is worth all of the fuzz. If I don't like it I'll just return.
The reason I am upgrading my motherboard, is because my motherboard's fan control SUCKS, and isn't as stable as I would like it to be. I am also running X8 as my CPU cooler is way to big for the motherboard, so I have no SLI either. That's why I am upgrading to a Maximus VII Hero motherboard, I am still keeping my 4770K of course
