1080p monitor with with high refresh rate/response time or 1440p monitor with high refresh rate/response time?

I am getting a 980ti and I am planning to game on this monitor. I was looking around the web but I could not decide what resolution I should get for gaming. I know that the 980ti would be overkill for 1080p but 1440p is too expensive. Should I get a 1080p monitor with specs like 144hz and 1ms response time or a 1440p monitor with specs of 60hz and 4-5ms? Thank You!

Extra question: Should I get a v-sync monitor?

I faced the same choice, and since I only use my PC once or twice a week, and mostly play racing/driving games, I chose 1080 @ 144hz and a 280x.

I've dropped the refresh rate to 100hz, and most games can get pretty close to that at decent settings.

Having said that, If you are getting a 980Ti, I'd get a 1440. Any chance you can get a 144hz?
