It actually doesn't look too bad when running 1080 on a UHD screen since the 1080 resolution is just pixel-doubled (perfect 2x scale since 3840x2160 is exactly twice the horizontal & vertical pixel count of 1080). It's certainly less revolting to look at than using any other lower resolution.

Hi Chaingunchris,

You can run any 4k @ 1080p with a standard 1080p monitor either side to form Nvidia Surround / XfireX.

There is no point in upgrading to a 4k monitor if you are wanting to play games in beautiful 4k and don't have the horsepower to achieve acceptable FPS.

I've been doing alot of research into 4k gaming recently and the hard truth is you need SLI GTX 980's or 980 Ti's as a minimum. Look at the witcher 3 - 980 Ti's in SLI on 4k will deliver ~50 fps - Thats £1100 in GPU's then the cost of the monitor.

The best half way house is 1440p on a single 980 Ti - but then again, this is just putting a plaster on an itch if you want to get to 4k gaming.

I have been playing on 5760 x 1080 for some time now, and i've just sold 2 x 970's for a single 980 ti as i found that the witcher 3 was getting ~40fps on nvidia surround.

What spec PC do you have at the moment?

Well my friend, as always it boils down to one thing.... money!

If you are going to go to 4k gaming there is only 1 - thats right! ONE 4k monitor which has G-sync - Acer XB280HK http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/acer-monitor-umpb0ee005

If you aren't fussed about G-Sync then maybe this monitor Samsung U28D590D (the same as the Acer but no G-sync)

If you do want to goto 4k then you need a 2nd 980 my friend - and even then you'll be looking at High settings in most cases to get ~45 fps - game dependant.

The Fury X is an interesting one for me as i don't know if they are going to be using a new architecture - if they were i would have thought they would have implemented it in the r9 3x series. The FuryX using the new HBM memory - and the latest figures produced by AMD show the FuryX outperforming the 980 Ti. i have no idea what 'Fiji' architecture is at this stage, i think there's an article on here somewhere.

I would love to see some 3rd party independant benchmarks as this all seems ODD :)

This is a Liquid cooled GPU vs an air cooled GPU too.

I did find some benchmarks of the fury x vs the 980 TI

Freesync monitors are cheaper than g-sync monitors and hopefully AMD's response to the 980 ti will heat up a price war because the way i see it if AMD can produce a faster GPU than the 980 ti at a lower price point which can use the cheaper freesync monitors Nvidia will need to response accordingly.

It's a shame that AMD are always biting nvidia's heels and not the other way round.

MarkW - you think that Fury X will out perform the 980 Ti ?

A great example of the savings you can get is the Samsung U28E590D 4k 28" FREESYNC - It's 1ms response time for £420 - it's counterpart with G-sync is £80 more expensive!

Shame the fury x has only 4GB...

some more benchmark results:

DX12 API will be really good for GPUs! - i dont think mantle will matter much as in the future games will be developed for DX12 > Mantle in terms of priority.

There are more than 12 Freesync monitors coming out soon too, whereas G-sync monitors arent in abundance because of the cost of the module which needs to sit in the pannel. from a manufacturers POV this eats into profits.

the key word being FREE|sync.

I really really really hope the Fury X and FreeSync technology starts to take over especailly in the 4k gaming scene.

For me Nvidia have had it too good for too long and need to pass some savings on to the end user. - i am neither team green or red - but historially nvidia are #1 with their shadowplay stuff and proactive driver updates for game releases.

We will know for sure on Wednesday. That is the day the embargo on publishing Fury X reviews is lifted.

In the mean time, we have that chart above, and this one I will show you below... This is an AMD provided chart. It is testing the Fury X vs the 980Ti. At 4K resolution.
