Case - CPU - Motherboard holding me back.

Hi,

Its been 7 years since I last did a build from the ground up and I feel a bit out of the game when it comes to upgrading. Decided to post in this forum as I'm needing some advice, mostly around GPU performance. Not really a gamer as such, however have used the pc in the past for some gaming - Im looking for a high end GPU for number crunching, primarily for pen testing using pyrit.

I would like to retain my current case, Sonata III 500 however its space internally is quite restricted for these larger graphics cards ( Hard Drive bays get in the way) it would however hold a Gigabyte Nvidia Gtx 970 Mini Itx without any spaces issues. However from what I have read on here the CPU and Motherboard would most likely hold this GPU back, is this correct ?

My current spec is:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz)
ASUS P5KC AiLifestyle Series iP35 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard
8GB DDR 2
ASUS 9600GT 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI HDCP HDTV out PCI-E Graphics CardAntec Sonata III Piano Black Quiet Mid Tower Case - With 500W EarthWatts PSU
2 x 250 GB Hard Drives

So what would be better, sell my existing setup and start from scratch again building a new system with larger case that would accommodate larger GPUS's for number crunching but would also function as a gaming unit?

Cheers

Your case and power supply are good, I wouldn't sell them. However, like me, you're running a 7 year old Core 2 Quad chip, which isn't really enough anymore.

I don't know much about Pyrit, does it use a lot of CPU as well as GPU power?

Thanks for the reply Woody,

Pyrit uses GPU instead of CPU so the higher end cards provide faster computational speed, good thread on here if you want to learn more. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/wireless-security-hack,review-32252-8.html

Love my case, however it's space is the biggest restriction, without taking out the bay's for the hard drives with a Dremel, it's never going to fit the larger 28cm GPU cards. The gtx 970 is a good comprise however it doesn't allow for sli which the larger versions do allow, more GPU the quicker I can conduct a pentest.

Cheers

Okay, I have an idea. Put some money towards a decent case with good airflow and a good CPU cooler, and overclock your Q6600 as high as it will go. With the remaining budget, we can look at graphics cards. Does Pyrit use CUDA cores?

Yes, Pyrit uses CUDA cores. For CPU cooling I already have a Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro. Any recommendations for a decent case?
