if i play on 1080 and edit in sony vegas and render in 1440p will it look worse

Solution
Sure -

I use PowerDirector and just do everything in 1080p. This matches my PC and how I upload to YouTube and our TVs that we play them on and my mate's projector that we use too.

If you render at a resolution that you are not going to use then you are using more CPU power and more of your time to do the rendering.
If by render a 1080 to 1440 (upscaling), yes it will look worse than 1080 in 1080 out. If you ment edit and render a 1440 video in 1080 it will not look worse. If you ment edit and render a 1440 video while resolution is all the way down to 1080, it will look just as good as 1440 in and 1440 out.

Explaining what your question is in detail would help! :)
