I just got a new monitor, that is capable to use 2560x1440 @ 144 Hz but I can only use that resolution at 60 Hz. I have tried the DVI-D cable that came with the monitor and a mini DP- DP cable that I puchased separatly. I have tried several drivers and beta drivers for my AMD Radeon HD 6970 card. The card has Displayport 1.2 and should support 1440p @144 Hz.
Get the message Displayport "lower settings applied" on windows 7 startup. I can set it to 144 Hz in Amd control senter but then the max resolution is 1080p.. Can anyone help me please ?

go to desktop screen. right click on the scree, then click on screen resolution, then you will see a screen with display, resolution, landscape option. and on the side there is a option to go advanced settings, press that. then go to monitor and set the hz to the 120hz or 144 or what ever its your monitor

Only 60 Hz available there. CCC reports max refresh for the monitor 144Hz. I just can't set it.

Download the newest AMD drivers.
Then download Display Driver Uninstaller.
Also download ToastyX Custom resolution utility.

Run reset-all.exe from toastyX CRU package.
Then uninstall the current AMD drivers (the normal way).
Then reboot to safe mode and run DDU (display driver uninstaller).
Reboot back and install the amd drivers.

If You still get the 144 hz error and you are limited to 1080p, your display port cable is at fault--buy a new cable.
Unfortunately, not all cables are made equal. And I think you need a DP 1.2 cable for 2560x1440@144 hz.

I'm using this cable.

Thanks Falkentyne. I will try that. I suspect the cable, but I have tried the DVI-D cable that came with the monitor. I then get the option to use 120 hz, but when I apply it, the monitor goes black and the monitor says no signal. I have used DDU and are now using AMD 15.7 driver. I will try toastyx. The DP cable is 5 m, can that be a problem ?

I can't really help more.
DVI will be limited by pixel clock. I don't know what the DVI clock is for 120 hz, but at 1080p, as you already know, you should be able to use 1920x1080 up to 144 hz through DVI.

The only way to use DVI at 2560x1440 at higher than 100hz is to use the ToastyX AMD pixel clock patcher.
http://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-AMD-ATI-Pixel-Clock-Patcher

Some people have said that they were able to get 120hz over DVI with the patcher. 144 hz over DVI won't work at 2560x1440.
For 1920x1080, you should be able to do all refresh rates up to 144hz over DVI, but that's lower than native resolution.

So you should try the DP cable I listed to see if that fixes the problem.

There's also a V002 firmware for the monitor (I think Benq also swaps the panel too) which fixes some issues. You can contact Benq for an upgrade, as only brand new stock currently shipping will have V002.

I still dont think the amd 6000 series cards can do anything above 60hz in single stream, they needed multi stream and then I think you're still limited to 120hz... its akin to single link dvi and double link.

But if anyone knows definitively it would be toastyX, he probably has a patch for it too. loL
