A single card is always better than two SLIed cards (at the same price) due to problems like microstuttering, over heating etc.

Anyways the r9 290 beats the GTX 760 hands down in terms of perfomance, but if you are buying the r9 290 buy the sapphire tri x edition, as it cools much better.

Yes of course but even then the r9 290 will beat it, as it has higher pixel rate, higher texture rate and more shading units to say the least.

Buying two cards in SLI is just not worth it when you have a single card which gives higher perfomance at the same price.

Here:
I'd say go for sapphire because:
1) higher memory clock speed
2) lower consumption
3) better cooling, thus can be overclocked a lot more

I'd say go for ASUS because
1) cheaper
2) 40mm shorter so can fit in most cases
The sapphire version required me to remove some drive bays.

If I buy AMD cards, I prefer to buy sapphire cards as they have better cooling and slightly less noisy than the others
On newer AMD cards: above r9 280
Sapphire>MSI=Gigabyte>ASUS

On older AMD cards: below r9 280
MSI>gigabyte>ASUS>Saphire
The $50 additional is worth it especially if you would be looking to overclock it.
