Will I regret buying the i7-5960x when the Skylake CPU's are out

So I already ordered the i7-5960x and I know almost nothing about the performance of Skylake CPU's. Should I cancel/return my order and wait for the new CPU's, or will the 5960x last me several years while staying relevant?

Thank you.

There will always be new cpus coming out. Skylake-e (similar to the 5960x), the enthusiast 6-8 core i7's won't be out for awhile. Those platforms don't upgrade as often as the mainstream desktop platforms. There's no reason you should regret a cpu purchased now, even a 4690k/4790k will be relevant and last users the next several years much less the 5960x.

It depends what you're doing with your pc, what tasks you need it to do. The 5960x is basically the most expensive desktop cpu available but technically it doesn't have the highest clock speeds either. The skylakes coming out first are the mainstream cpus, replacements for the 1150 socket i5's and i7's.

no , you will not regret buying i7-5960x , That is the strongest consumer oriented CPU ever , it will last really really long before you will notice
your system being "slow" or being "older" to new CPUs

on a side note : what will you use the 5960x in ?

No. Skylake isnt shaping up to be what its been hyped up as (a 12-15% increase). Surprise, surprise. x86 is and has been in the stages of diminishing returns (since sandy bridge). So long as we are stuck with x86, which will be a long, long time, you wont have to upgrade from that cpu until they start writing software that isnt compatible with the chip. But, our current chips are far more advanced then our software. So, i would say you would be good to go for 10ish years with that cpu.

EDIT:

just look at the 990x. That thing is still kicking @$$ and taking names. As is the 3970x. Those chips are from '11 and '12.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I'm trying to build the most future-proof computer money can buy. So right now I have the MSI X99S Gaming 7 mobo and 2x 980 Ti's, and I naturally went with the most advanced LGA-2011-v3 CPU. I'm starting to rethink this decision though, I might go for the 5930k instead.

5960x has 8 cores for a 1000$ price
5930k has 6 cores for a 570$ price
TL;DR : 2 extra cores for 400$ more is honestly too much , If extra 400$ is worth nothing for you then get the 5960x

on gaming performance is the same between 5960/5930 as they both have more than enough hyperthreaded cores
on computer performance 5960 might get you more performance in rare situations where as much cores are required
which translates to maybe 1-3 seconds better render time or 1-2 more fps in games ,

Newer games are going to use 6+ threads , while 5930 has 12 thread so you will have much much time till games even start to use your CPU full power .

Do not forget to get at least a 2011-v3 cooler that is rated for 140+ watt TDP

Oh, I wasn't aware that there are different compatibilities for coolers too. I looked it up and it appears that my H100i is 2011-v3 compatible.

Thank you.
