Hello, I have a supposedly "240hz monitor" display called Sony Playstation 3D display and I am trying to achieve 120hz with it but I cant ive tried everything from tweaks and AMD catalyst control settings changing the resolution but none of it works, I am using HDMI cable at the moment, which I believe is the reason on why I cant get 120hz with 1080p. However Ive read from forums that you can get 120hz with dual link DVI, my graphics card (asus r9 280x) has DVI-DL ports however my monitor does not, it only has HDMI ports.
I am wondering if I could achieve 120hz at 1080p if I get a HDMI to dvi-dl adapter? this would let me plug in a dvi-dl cable to my graphics card and connect it to my monitor.
Any help, tips or comments would be highly appreciated thank you : )

You do not sound like a moron to me, or anyone here on forums... :) No, HDMI 1.4 can't do 120 Hz. By getting a DisplayPort adapter, you're still limited by that HDMI 1.4 chip. You can absolutely do 60 Hz x2 for full screen split screen gaming.
The 240 Hz is likely just interpolation or something of that nature. While there are true 240 Hz TV's, I doubt that the PlayStation TV is judging by the price of it.

To answer your question. Sadly, you're limited by the HDMI 1.4 chip which simply can't do 120 Hz at 1920x1080. You are going to need a HDMI 2.0 for 120 Hz at 1920x1080. Your graphics card don't have this, and your TV don't have this either. The slightly newer than HDMI 1.4a, the 1.4b, supports 1920x1080 60 Hz x2, using a technique called Frame Packing. This means that the TV (like majority of TV's out there) only support EXTERNAL inputs of 60 Hz...

Movies are actually just 24 Hz x2 = 48 Hz, 60 Hz x2 was designed for full screen split screen gaming in 2D, using 3D glasses. However, it can get confusing really fast. Internally TV's can do 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 100 Hz, 120 Hz, 200 Hz, 240 Hz -- without using interpolation or anything of that nature. But externally they can't.

If that TV does infact support external input of 120 Hz, then DVI Dual Link & DisplayPort are your only options. However, looking at the specs of that Sony Playstation 3D TV. It only supports HDMI, no DVI, and no DisplayPort. It is indeed designed for use with the PlayStation console, not PC.
