Heya everyone, I recently decided I wanted to build my own computer. I've spent a few days looking through forums, sites, and really have just been looking any sort of question, fact, or advise, I could find that would benefit be in fulfilling this project. The reason I'm here is, I'm hoping that I can receive assistance in completing my first build and was wondering if these parts would make up a good/strong computer that could both support gaming with high/medium settings and everyday work, such as surfing the Internet or writing up a report. I'm hoping to keep the build as inexpensive as possible and I don't really want to go too far over $500, seeing as how money is tight right now. (updated)

First step, drop the sound card. There's absolutely no need in a modern system unless you have a sound system worth far far more than your PC.

You can spend a lot less on a case. Aim for ~$50.

Use the savings from those to pick up something like a Pentium G3258 or Athlon 860K, and another 4GiB of RAM.

$500 is enough to get a pretty decent system unless you need to buy windows too.
