I have a 27" Samsung connected via HDMI. I am attempting to connect a 2nd monitor through the DVI-D port also using a DVI to DP cable.

I am connecting to a new Dell 28" UHD monitor through a display port. The setup is:

GPU DVI-D port <-- DVI-D male ---------------Display Port male --> Display port on monitor.

I was told this would work, how ever the new monitor says that nothing is connected to the DP.

Any help would be appreciated.

Solution
You can use the DP to DVI cable for the DVI input monitor, but you can't use the DP to DVI cable for the monitor in DVI input. Because the DP has power ( 3.3 V 500 mA) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort so that it can convert the signals, but in other hand the DVI-D only transmits the data, there is no electronics to power the DP to convert the signals so that it does not work in your way connection.

And I think your monitor should have other form inputs, like hdmi, try it out.
