Upgrading Windows 8.1 N question

Hey Gang,

I have a copy of Windows 8 N upgraded to 8.1. My question is? Is N a retail copy or an OEM? And if not sure. How do I check my version to see. I ask this because. I will be upgrading my PC to Skylake. And if this is an oem version. Then tthe OS will be tied to my current hardware. Thanks.

If the OS was included in the PC when you purchased the PC, then the OS is OEM.

Nope I got it from a buddy mine that works for company that is contracted by MS!

"SPECCY" as well as "Belarc Advisor" (free programs) will give you plenty of information about the computer. From this info you can find out whether the OS is OEM or Retail

Just ran slmgr /dlv in the cmd and tells me I have a retail version. Now I can upgrade to Skylake!!!!

Skylake is LGA 1151, chipset Z170, and either DDR3 or DDR4 depending on which the motherboard manufacturer decides.
