Can I connect two monitors to the same GPU?

I have a question. Can I connect 1 monitor to my gtx 980 using a hdmi cord and another using a display port? I just want a second monitor so I can look at walkthroughs and stuff when I am playing games. Can someone tell me if this is possible and will they both share the same display.

Sorry I am a complete noob to this as I have always used 1 monitor.

Yep that'll work just fine. You'll need to set up which monitor you want as your primary display when your inside windows but its simple enough. Just make sure the monitors you choose can handle the cable connection you want to use.
