So I tried to connect my laptop to my monitor using a vga cable in order to use the laptop as a second monitor. after several attempts the laptop has a blank wallpaper and my monitor hasn't changed. the laptop simply refuses to recieve any information from the monitor. please help

The video output on your laptop is only an output. You cannot connect a PC to it and expect it to show up.
