DirectX 9 Games don't work in windows 10?

I updated windows 7 to windows 10 and since then I cant play any game that uses d3d9. I tested just about every game I have and i get the same error. Any d3d other than d3d9 works perfectly. I tested all my ram sticks, together and separately, and tried to check for corrupt files with cmd. After contacting Microsoft and working with tech support for an hour where all they did was try to change compatibility mode, they said you don't know whats wrong and left me to it. I tried a clean boot too. I also cant seem to find anyone else on windows 10 with this problem but i have seen it in windows 7 and 8/8.1.

Just tried that and at the end it says " DirectX setup has determined that a newer or equivalent version of DirectX has been installed already. No installation is necessary." The problem still persists.

  3. OK so I found a fix, for me at least. The lab tech never got to me so I found this by myself.

What I did was go to windows update>advanced options>view update history and find "cumulative update for windows 10 for 64x-based systems(KB3081424)." This happens to also have a d3d9.dll in the update.

    See here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3081424

Now what I did was click Uninstall updates at the top and find the update under the Microsoft tab with the (KB3081424) code with it and uninstall, restart and now all d3d9 games work for me now.

Here is an updated link. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35&nowin10

It's odd. It's the same link as before but with "&nowin10" appended to the end of it.

Anyway works for me. Thanks for the original solution N3rdR4ge, it helped a lot.

Download the Redistributable pack, it WILL work unlike the websetup.

Enjoy, I know people say not to install this on Win 10, but it REALLY does work and fix many issues from, older games not working at all, or slow, to 3ds max rendering.

    This worked for me.
I was trying to get Morrowind to work with Morrowind Graphics Extended mod, but kept getting the error " "The program can't start because d3dx9_40.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix the problem."
As best as I can figure, that mod needs that dll to run, and the download from that link adds the necessary dll.
    I am running Windows 10 64-bit.
Also, note I ran everything as an adminstrator.
Morrowind Graphics Extended now works, as does Morrowind itself.
    Thank you! :pt1cable:
