random results when connecting external monitor to laptop

Hello,
I'm having a very strange issue —
I got a Lenovo Y50-70 15.6" laptop; Resolution - 1920x1080.
I'm trying to connect an external 1680x1050 SAMSUNG SyncMaster 2233 display.

The way it worked for 2 weeks (absolutely fine by me):
The resolution on the external screen automatically "tuned" itself perfectly and the laptop screen got black "edges" added to the screen (to fit itself to 1680x1050)/

The way this, suddenly, works now:
The main laptop display does not change at all; The external display tries to adapt itself to 1920x1080 res. and it looks absolutely awful. Even when using WINKEY+P to disable the laptop display - the external display can't work correctly.

I've updated all the drivers and connected/disconnected the screen's power line several times.

What can it be?

Check the monitor options and see what the scaling setting is, if you can't find it, look for a reset to factory option on the monitor and use that, see if it helps.
