I have been wanting to get a new gaming monitor (as an upgrade from the tv I am currently using.) and decided I would rather spend the extra $100 or so for a 144hz instead of the regular 60hz. I have found 4 but don't know enough about any to decide if price difference has anything to do with quality or brand name.
Acer $210: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KO4518I/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Asus $250: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B2HH7G0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
BenQ $280: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ITORITU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
LG $290: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P0EOX1S/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Toms did a review of the LG not long a go, seems that model has done really well despite the not well received part mentioned above.

Out of those picks the LG is 1st choice by many.

As for 144Hz and cable input, only DVI-D/I DualLink or DisplayPort HBR -Labeled on cables as HBR = High Bit Rate on certified DP cables can achieve 144Hz. 144Hz is more demanding than 4k. HDMI 2 can do 4k at 60Hz, yet not even 1080p at 144Hz.

For certified DisplayPort cables, Vesa recommends Accell Cables or Startech.

The Asus is widely popular and reviews are mostly positive, and the LG is not so popular, but it has some great reviews. Keep in mind that HDMI 1.4 doesn't have enough bandwidth to carry 120/144Hz. If you're not using HDMI 1.4, then you're good to go. I would go for the LG, because of its matte finish, and looks pretty badass with those buttons.

Acer and asus need to be configured out of the box for the right colors or the ICC profile. BenQ has some great features, its also nvidia 3d ready.
I would either pick LG or BenQ which ever has better deal. Cant go wrong with either.

Between which os? Windows 10 is best if your system is recent, at least a system based on Sandy Bridge platform ie; i7 2600k as I'm using it with Win10 and it works fine.

For 1080p @ 144Hz, either DualLink DVI or DisplayPort will be fine. DisplayPort has more bandwidth and can support 1600p @ 120Hz where DVI can't and DP can carry audio as well if your monitor had speakers. DisplayPort is better but depends on your needs and price.
