changing thermal paste makes 20C lower temperature?

Hello community

Im more of sharing an experience than asking here

im using the asrock fm2a75m dgs motheroard
a10-6800k cpu
artic freezer 13 cooler
before now i had problems with very high temperatures and computer powering down to prevent damage
when i tried to use this apu for gaming it went 85C+ and the computer turned off after like 30 sec from starting the gameplay
when i used my disgrete card the gigabyte gtx 970 g1 gaming the cpu went till like ~76C while the gpu was 46C under load :/
i used this thermal paste: kolink http://hutopaszta.arukereso.hu/kolink/4g-p278131035/

now i use the artic silver 5 (nothing else changed)
and while playing on the apu (the gtx 970 not in the computer) my cpu temps are at 61~66C under load
from above 85C that is a massive change

i applied everything correctly both times
i dont understand
How can the least expensive part of a computer mean so much?

please note that the temperature of my room while testing was 42C

its hot here in the summer xD

thank you for reading my thread

Things to note

1.) It may very well be that the compound used before had dried out or wasn't applied aptly. This can result in nasty temperatures while under load and even idle.

2.) If a non silver based compound was used prior to your reapplication, that could have been the cause of inadequate heat dissipation.

3.) The 970 is way way more powerful than your iGPU. As such it would do more work and force the APU to push to full load and remain there for a most sustained period of time, resulting in worse temperatures.

1 I had better temperatures with the gtx 970 installed

2 i applyed the kolink thermal paste 2 days ago retried cleaned it and apply again yesterday same results
It sure did NOT dry out
Today i bought the silver 5 and temperatures dropp drastically i used the same method all times this is not my first change of thermal paste just the most supprising result

My idle temps were exactly the same both times 44-46C
Because my room is 42C

I dont exactly understand your second point please explain
before kolink i used the thermal paste that was on the cooler when i bought it

I've never heard of kolink thermal paste, but among the more well known brands of thermal compound (silver based or not) there's very little difference in temps when properly applied and proper cooler mounting are used. Whether it's prolimatek pk1, pk2, pk3, arctic silver 5, mx-2, mx-4, noctua and so on. Some of the thermal difference may have been due to using an extremely unknown thermal compound with below average performance but the majority of the time it's from variation in thermal paste application or margin of error when installing the cooler. If it were absolutely without a doubt the difference in thermal compound only (doubtful), this would be a highly isolated incident.

The typical difference between thermal compounds are 1-3c, not 20c. The reason it's likely there was something wrong with the cooler installation, if you look at tom's thermal compound comparison, there wasn't even a 20c temp difference between extreme high end specialty enthusiast thermal solutions like coollabs liquid pro (32c) and proctor and gamble toothpaste of all things (48c). With only an 11.5c difference between the as5 you used and toothpaste I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest user error in mounting the cooler. I can't imagine even an unknown brand of thermal compound performing worse than toothpaste.

i have tried to apply the kolink more times and ALWAYS got same results i applied the artic silver and voala my pc works :)
i know how to install my cooler its unlikely that i f...ed up installing the cooler 2-3 times and than i did everything right first time
and i used the same method after applying the artic silver

lol if i know that i try toothpaste first xD
