hooking up three monitors to a single video card

Thinking of venturing into a 3 monitor set up wondering about connections as HDMI and DVI inputs are common on monitors and R9-290x and GTX780 have HDMI DVI-I and DVI-D and DP...can u set it up(single card) w main using HDMI and lateral screens with the two DVI connections or should i get a monitor with a DP and do DP and 2 DVI...thought I read something that u cant use the HDMI and DVI on same slot

They-re all digital, the difference will be bandwidth, you won't run into any problems other than that. HDMI obviously won't fit in anything but HDMI, so a simple passive adapter is all you'll need. Try to stick to HDMI -> HDMI, DVI-D -> DVI-D, DP -> DP if possible.

i saw some posts that had said when they hooked up a monitor to the HDMI slot that DVI slot just under it would not work
