okay ,

1- use any PC to download this tool

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

if the PC has 32 bit system then download the 32 bit tool , and if 64 bit then downloaf the 64 bit . this has nothing to do with the version of the windows or the bit of the windows you will download . it is just for the downloader program to run.

2- when you run the tool it will give you the option to choose between upgrading this pc or creating installation media for another pc , choose creating media for other PC .

3-then choose which language and which version of windows , and 64 bit or 32 bit windows 10 , dont choose both it will make the media needed big. choose what you need and I assume 64bit.

4-then choose on what media tp make it , making ISO for burning on DVD , or usb stick.

5- after you download it and it is ready , if you chose ISO then burn it on DVD ( you will need dual layer DVD if you chose to download both 64bit and 32 bit version , or an 8G flash stick . if you chose only 64 bit then normal DVD is enough .

here you go you are ready and have the windows 10 to use it.

IF you buy USB stick make sure it is USB3 and never get old usb2 sticks . and look at the read/write speed , dont get lower than 150MB/s read and 40MB/s Write ... and get at least 8G stick. 16 is better.

you will need to boot from win10 DVD and choose repair. or boot from any other tools.

Then program will make the USB windows stick for you .

then you boot the machine using that USB , you enable boot from USB in Bios and make boot order USB first.

OR you can make ISO and burn it on DVD and boot from DVD. both work.

boot in safe mode if you can, or on a secondary image of windows like a repair disk, then copy the files over to a thumb drive.

In case anyone is still looking at this thread, I have booted the pc with the USB containing windows 10 and it gives me two options:
Upgrade - I keep my files and upgrade windows
Custom - Lose my files
The problem is that if I try upgrade then it says to take out the USB, restart so that it boots normally and then do the upgrade again by putting the USB back in. but when I restart it blue screens so what should I do? I don't want to lose my files but I suppose I could. Also if I lose my files will I lose the diagnostic dump which johnbl wanted to know about?

oh I remember now .

you should choose repair , not upgrade ...

it will be written in small fonts in the corner

it is the second screen , before the screen you are talking about

boot from usb , and choose repair ... it comes before the upgrade screen

I hope you did not make upgrade over it :(

this is the way to get to safe mode , command prompt and access your files ... not install windows again ..
