I just finished my new computer build and tried connecting my monitor and it wouldn't connect. The monitor is a HP 20555 SH249 and uses a USB connection. Do I need driver software for the monitor or could I have connected something wrong? I was also grounded while building my PC. I couldn't find the driver online. Also, I don't have an OS yet and plan on getting Linux because it's free. I would also be using a 500gb external hard drive until I could buy a new one. I have the z97 Gaming 7 motherboard, 2 16gb DDR3 2400 Vengeance Pro RAM, and the Core i5 4690k processor.

Tthat´s your problem then. Without an external interface, your monitor cant´t work with USB.
You have to plug it into the DVI or VGA port of your motherboard and your monitor.

something like this won´t work:

something like this could work, but would be unnecessary:

because your PC supports DVI and VGA natively

I think you have a typo in your description. It can´t use a USB connection. Use a VGA or DVI cable (recommended)

Does your PC beep or which code does the motherboard´s debug LED show?

try to update the bios of the motherboard with an USB thumb drive and the MSI extracted BIOS on it.

you don´t need a driver for the monitor to display something at the start up, before even entering any OS.
Nearly all Linux distributions have built in drivers for the graphics card/chip. no need to search around ;)
