Is this a great idea to do? I learned my files and settings will stay if I upgrade to windows 8 then to windows 8.1. Then I will upgrade to Windows 10 pro.

Solution

Win 7 Home Premium to Win 8 Pro will almost certainly require a full reinstall.
You could just go directly from Win 7 HP to Win 10 Home.

It will be Win7 Home to Win7 Pro, then Win8 Pro(or should be straight to Win8.1Pro), then Win10 Pro.

I just don't think you can purchase a Windows 7 anytime upgrade license any more.

If you have a Dreamspark Win 10 license, then just do that.
Wipe and reinstall with that.

If you Upgrade from your existing Win 7 to 10, there is no reason to do anything with the Dreamspark code.
Do one or the other...not both.
