Youtube and other HD video performing better in Windows than in Linux

I built an AM1 Athlon 5350 PC (4GB 1600 Mhz Ram on MSI AM1I Motherboard, HD5350 512 MB Video Card) intending to use it for Linux Mint. On Firefox I was getting laggy video at 720p as well as screen tearing on Youtube. Furthermore I was getting very limited resolution choices. Works better on Chrome but was still stuttering. I loaded Windows 8.1 on the same system and it's running very smoothly even showing up to 1440 resolution w/o lag.

Why is it that Youtube runs like crap on Linux (I tried Zorin and Lubuntu also) but runs well on Windows?

no secret that flash and html5 video suck on linux,

try instead with mpv+youtube-dl ;)

Code:
mpv https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PN5JJDh78I

In firefox I have this extension, and there are many others:
