Depends on your budget.
I would say the r9 290 or r9 390 and the GTX 970 is the SWEET SPOT for 1080p gaming at the moment.
The 4gb's/3.5+0.5gb's is acceptable for 1080p gaming and either of these cards would max out most games as well.

I would say a quality PSU of around 550w+ would do it for either card.
