Because TV's use a standardized resolution based upon both the display as well as the recording device used and scale based on that. Theres a lot more to it about why 1440p ended up not being used but the extremely abridged version is it was easier for panel manufacturers to manufacture to the HD 1080p resolution, and then to the 4k resolution (which is just 2x HD).
TV manufacturers would have to have a different product line at that resolution to sell to a small bit of the market, it would confuse customers (QuadHD Vs 4K, what does that mean???), and cost more than its worth.
