Can you out audio from monitor that is connected to the computer via HDMI

I am about to go purchase a monitor for my laptop. My Auxiliary output for my computer doesn't work so I can plug speakers up to that. I am thinking I could plug the monitor up via HDMI and then set both video and audio output to the monitor, The monitor itself doesn't have any built in speakers but would it be possible to plug the speakers into the monitor and output from there?

It probably depends on the monitor. You would have to look at the features/specifications to see if it supports audio pass-through.

What's the brand and model of the monitor?

If the monitor doesn't have an audio line out jack then the answer is no.
