Link between Window 10 start button and LAN?

Downloaded Windows 10 onto one of my PCs and found start menu wouldn't work. Tried several recommended fixes and nothing. Then, today, I had a problem with getting internet connection and, while checking each end of the cable (between PC and switch) found the connector that I'd plugged into the LAN port on the PC was wired (by me) 1,2,3,4,5,7,6,8 and had been actually working for many weeks. I'd had a few issues but had kept it going. I removed the old connector, rewired the new one correctly, plugged it in and everything worked including, all of a sudden, the Start Menu. My question: what could be the connection between ethernet and the Start Menu?

Probably just a coincidence, but could be a corrupted/lazy driver that somehow corrupted just that section.
