Hello hardware folks,

I have been given a $3000 budget to build a sweet gaming rig for a friend. I like building PCs, having built all of my own in the past. I just wanted to run this by you guys before I put in the order for the parts.

Some note about the machine:
- Will be used primarily (almost exclusively) for gaming.
- Parts will be purchased in USA (Washington state).
- The only parts I am firm on are the CPU and the 970 2-way SLI.

You could save few more dollars.
Power Supply: 2x970's only needs (700-800)Watt, a 850W would be ideal.

Display:Two 4K monitors, not really with 970's. I would rather get a good 1440p display & a single powerful card.

Well, my build would be like this:

You almost put together my build except i have 1 card (+some minor differences like cooling) lol :D
I would go for the single fastest gpu for now but great build otherwise
A gtx 970 can technically handle 4k 60 fps medium settings with demanding aaa titles or maxed out not too demanding ones (gta 5 and the witcher 3 are considered demanding battlefield 4 is not in my opinion i would run that in 4k maxed no doubt :D

The post above mine already pointed out the gpu you should be going for the 980 ti is great ;)
The other changes he made will be a preference i think if you want 4k you can you get better performance on 1440p for sure but the 980 ti is very capable in 4k
The cpu change is a preference too i think doesnt make much difference in gaming :/

"The only parts I am firm on are the CPU and the 970 2-way SLI."
If you truly are (that i dont recomend on the gpu side again not bcs its not powerful enough but bcs you could go with 1 card and its always better to start with 1 card)
Than change the psu to a tier 1 850w psu as suggested and i would spend that extra you gain to the cpu cooler for a better stable oc ;) (your chosen cooler is not bad i just like a good noctua nh d15 or a watercooling aio)

I would rather go 4790k, 1440p, with dual GTX 980ti, vs the original build. GTX 970's, even in SLI, are not that great, for 4k. Skylake isn't worth what it costs to go with. RM PSU's are not very good either.

Yea, and they chose a Tier 3, 1kw model. G2 series are tier 1 and come with a 10yr warranty. I wouldn't even get the that 850w model, when I can get a better tier 1 G2 850w, and even the Seasonic built GS, for a bit less.

yea, that's it but i don't know why, dotto listed RM 850 at Tier 2. That's the only one from RM series have Japanese capacitors?. It's strange to believe why not other RM power supply's.

If you want to run 4K then get the R9 390x they are around $400 but with 8GB of Vram and a lot less expensive than the 980. But, why would you want to game in 4K besides picture quality and less money in your pocket (Unless the games he plays don't really need 144hz) The Radeon cards do consume a lot more power though, but I think a 1000w PSU is good to run 2

What do you need the sound card, network adapter and ridiculously expensive monitor for? And if you're not getting at least a 980TI you're doing it wrong.

This is what I would do:

The suggestion was made according to his preference.
I feel, instead of dual 4K monitor a single 1440p is better with a single powerful video card.

Folks, thank you for all your suggestions... this is precisely why I love this forum: passionate people making gaming rigs better everywhere. I will look into the 980 Ti, but my budget was eaten up by those pricey 4k monitors. I cannot believe there isn't more choice out there.
