Monitor Affect on Gaming Performance?

I have been researching monitors all over the internet and still find myself confused on how a monitor affects gaming performance. From my understanding, it comes down to the refresh rate and the amount of HZ (60HZ, 120HZ, 144 HZ)? Does the amount of HZ lock the monitors ability to display higher FPS?
I'm currently shopping for a monitor and I'm confused because I don't know what to look for. I want to play games in 1080p at 60FPS+, will these monitors allow me to do that?

The second option is extra confusing, will it seriously not work with a GTX 970? I'm sorry if these are simple questions, I'm just confused when it comes to displays. I appreciate the help!

Thank you,
Thomas

The 970 is just fine for 1080p @ 144 hz. To see how it does in 19 games, start here:

And if you use Afterburner, you can figure to get about 17% more than the reference 970

If budget allows, I would get 144 Hz.... it's one of those things that once used, you won't wanna go back.

120/144 Hz allows you to use strobing which eliminates motion blur. G-Sync monitors allow for both frame synchronization and ULMB (Ultra low motion blur) but ya budget prolly won't get you a G-Sync model. a Good 144 Hz is about $100 more than the 2 you listed...
