Feel as though I should upgrade the GPU to a 960 even if it'll cost me a few bucks more....

Power supply is low quality. Corsair CX is overpriced and poor quality. The electrolytic capacitors die very quickly, so this PSU fails many people soon. It also has only okay voltage regulation and ripple. Also, for just $13 more you can get a 1TB hard drive.

An XFX 550W unit. Check out this Tier list http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html it's easier that way rather than me babbling a bunch of PSUs to you.

You're friends probably recommended the Corsair CX to you because that is the #1 PSU all new builders tend to sway toward because it always appears first in search results for power supplies. Its quality is deceiving.
