Currently running a system that i built ~6years ago using the help/suggestions of the wonderful members of this forum.

Specs:
i7-920 with Dark Knight cooler, running stock clocks.
Asus P6T Motherboard
6gig's Corsair XMS 1600 Ram
EVGA GTX 275
Corsair 750w PSU
1TB WD Black HD
Coolermaster Tower
And, wait for it....Vista Enterprise(it was free)...:pt1cable:

This machine is mainly used for gaming at middling resolutions, and has been rock solid since day one, but is starting to show its age.

As you can see several areas are WELL behind the curve at this point, specifically the GPU, amount of RAM, and the OS. I've also read conflicting reports on whether the i7-920 can still hold its own compared to more modern chips.

Would it be worthwhile to upgrade the GPU, RAM, and OS on the old system or should i just cut my losses and build a new AMD system (new Intel system is slightly out of my budget), while turning the old system into a media box?

This is the AMD build i've been kicking around (reusing PSU, tower, etc):

-AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W FD8350FRHKBOX Desktop Processor
Item #: N82E16819113284

- 1 × SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 250GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-75E250B/AM
Item #: N82E16820147372

- 1 × ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 7 x SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
Item #: N82E16813131851

- 2 × CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9
Item #: N82E16820233144

- Windows 8.1

And either:

- EVGA 02G-P4-3753-KR G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 750 Ti Superclocked 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Video Card

or

- EVGA GeForce GTX 960 02G-P4-2966-KR 2GB SSC GAMING w/ACX 2.0+, Whisper Silent Cooling Graphics Card

Any input, insights, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I think that the CPU is still a quite capable performer, and they overclock wonderfully. Your cooler should be adequate for a nice bump. Free upgrade! You have enough RAM for gaming and the PSU is pretty good. The older Corsairs were good quality. That just leaves two things I would recommend upgrading. If your on a 1080p monitor, look at the GTX 970 cards. You will be able to max out settings on most games. Next, invest in an SSD like the Samsung Evo and move your OS to it. This alone will make you think you have a new computer. I don't think the AMD build would give you a noticeable increase in performance unless you were doing heavy threaded tasks.
