windows 8.1 upgrade to windows 10

i'm building a new pc and still have my windows 8 key from my laptop. in order to upgrade, do i enter my windows 8 key during the windows 10 setup to upgrade it?

Good Question.
It used to be tha tyou had to install 8, then update completely, and then follow the upgrade to 10 prompt that you should have by now.

I beleive its changed so hopefully one of the experts will chime in below.

I verified last week after the Win 10 update that you can enter a Win 7 or 8 key with a fresh Win 10 install, and successfully activate it. I did this with retail versions of 7 and 8 though, so an OEM key may be different.

NOTE: You may have to use the phone verification process. I had one that went through fine, and one that I had to talk to an agent to finish the process.

The key from the laptop won't work on the new build anyways, that's an oem key for the laptop. If you upgrade from 10 with the same hardware, you don't even have to put in a key. They keep track of the hardware and it auto activates. I've confirmed that myself.

Your new PC needs its own license. You can't use the one from your laptop.
