What monitor should I look at?

Hi people!

I would like to upgrade my current monitor which is an old Samsung 23" 1080p LCD. I live in Argentina where everything is WAY overpriced and we don't have access to a wide variety of models. I would like to upgrade to a 27" or bigger display and the monitors available that I can get are:

-Asus Vg278he 1080p 144hz
-Samsung UD590 28" 4K 60hz
-LG Ultrawide 29"

The thing is: Taking into account that we are almost in 2016, is 1080p still worth? Some friends told me that I should better look for a 1440p display. I could afford a 27" 1440p 144hz but without G-Sync. Is G-Sync THAT worth the extra price? Also, the Samsung sounds good, but my current GPU is a GTX 970 so I should be upgrading it, too, which is extra money. I tought upgrading to a 1440p would be nice, my 970 could handle some games nicely, and in the future upgrade to a 980 Ti. I would like to hear your opinions. Thank you very much!

If you're not extremely competitive I would go with 1440p, but there's definitely an argument for both. 144Hz 1440p would be even better if it can fit in the budget. Your graphics hardware may not be able to put out those framerates though. But at 1440p I would turn off the eyecandy like AA, with those resolutions it's not that noticeable anyway.
1080p 144Hz vs 1440p 60Hz.

What games do you play? If you do a lot of highly-competitive multiplayer games I would go for the 144Hz. If you like stunning visuals I would go for 1440p. Personally I don't think G-Sync is worth the current price premium.

Hey thanks! I mostly play FPS games such as BF3, BF4, Star Wars Battlefront. I play games like Fallout, GTA V, etc. I don't play highly-competitive... As I said, I could afford a 27" 1440p with 144hz, but that's all. What's your opinion about that? Thanks!

Great. Lets say that I can't get the 1440p 144hz, but a 60 hz display: those Hz are that noticible? I read people saying "144hz and 60hz are two different worlds"... As I said, in the near future I'm planning to upgrade to a 980 Ti so the frames shouldnt be a problem.. Any 1440p display you could reccommend me?

It's noticeable, but I wouldn't say it's life changing. I actually have a 60Hz and a 144Hz side-by-side. If you have friends with a 144Hz monitor go play some games at their place for a couple of hours then go back to your 60Hz and see how you feel about it.

Great. I'll wait for the 1440p monitors then. Thanks for the support.
